UNIVERSITY SHORT-TERM STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM _
INNOVATIVE JAPANESE TECHNOLOGIES IN 3M-BASED
Tomoyuki KAKESHITA, et al. (School of Engineering)
This course studies innovative Japanese technologies that have drastically
changed the world in the principal engineering fields: Mechanical, Materials,
and Manufacturing (3M-based) Engineering. This series of lectures given by six
professors is also concerned with the basic principles and backgrounds of their
(1) RESEACH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNET AND SHAPE MEMORY MATERIALS IN
JAPAN (Prof. KAKESHITA, Tomoyuki)
The lecture deals with the permanent magnet and shape memory materials, which
have been researched and developed in Japan. Also, a basic talk is given on
the magnetism, magnetic properties and the martensitic transformation under
high magnetic field and high pressure.
(2) MECHANICS AND STRUCTURES: FROM CARBON NANOTUBE TO TRUSS STRUCTURE (Prof.
The topic of the carbon nanotube, which was discovered by Sumio Iijima of NEC
Corp., is discussed here and its recent applications to the engineering field
are especially emphasized.
(3) ADVANCED CONTROL OF MACHANICAL SYSTEMS: RESERCH ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN (Associate
Prof. OHTSUKA, Toshiyuki)
This lecture first describes the importance and key ideas of advanced control
in the field of mechanical engineering. Then the lecture introduces some research
activities in Japan, including industrial applications.
(4) LASER APPLIED MEASUREMENT IN NANOTECHNOLOGY (Assoc. Prof. TAKAYA, Yasuhiro)
It is impossible to manufacture almost any high-tech products without Nanotechnology.
An introductory lecture is given on the technical essence of the laser applied
measurements which are indispensable in establishing Nanotechnology.
(5) BREATHING CERAMICS CONTRIBUTE TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (Prof. O.-Y.-MATSUO,
Ceramics called solid state ionics have been applied to the construction of
fuel of cells for clean energy production and catalysts for the removal of harmful
exhausted gases. Cations and anions can move swiftly in them, and exchange of
gas-species between ceramics and gases takes place; ceramics are breathing?
This lecture gives an introductory story on the field of ionics which a lot
of Japanese researches have been devoted to.
(6) TREND OF ELECTRONICS ASSEMBLY AND ITS RELIABILITY (Prof. FUJUMOTO, Kozo)
Labo Tour 2
A test or a report will be made in each class.
